When Jesus spoke of his Kingdom, he said it would be like the mustard seed, 23,000 of which can fit in a teaspoon (Matthew 13:31-32). He said that even though it was the smallest of seeds, it grew into a great plant.
This year our church is celebrating its 125th birthday as a congregation of Jesus Christ, aware that despite our history we are recent to the communion of the redeemed. Our task continues to be the same as it has been since the Lord himself ascended to heaven, to “make disciples” and baptize them and teach them “all that he commanded.” We do that with seniors who have spent their entire lives at this church, and with children who are just now finding out just who Jesus is. One member of our congregation who is now in a nursing home has been a part of this church for 93 of its 125 years, and was one of the first women to be named a deacon. Two brothers, ages nine and ten, were recently baptized and evidence in their lives their love for the Lord, and their love for our church. In between are the rest of us, trying to live a mustard seed existence for the cause of Christ.
